Internship opportunity.

The position is for a trainee to master the history of silversmithing with a view to eventually be in a position to undertake purchases, sales, valuations and commissions of silver.

This will involve a one-year internship to study under supervision hallmarks, makes, styles and history of silver objects.

To clean and maintain silver stock and to learn the principles of valuing silver.

 

After the provisional year, it would be hoped that a full time position could be offered.

Training for this post would probably require 5 years of study, visiting workshops and spending time at the bench to understand the various methods of manufacture and decoration.  Also a short course in Silversmithing at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation along with membership of the Silver Society.

Once sufficiently qualified in this field, the travelling to private homes, Churches, Museums, Army Messes and Universities to value, estimate repairs or undertake commissions for new presentation items.

 

This may entail travelling at least throughout the Country also visiting Salerooms and Antique Fairs either as an exhibitor or purchaser.

 

An introduction to general jewellery would also be necessary to a level where sales and rough estimations of value can be undertaken.

Porter/ Caretaker role.

Grey-Harris & Co are looking for a Porter/Caretaker to join the team.

We have been in Clifton, Bristol for over 50 years in a historic Georgian building consisting of four floors with various allocated uses.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide a porterage service.  There may be some heavy lifting involved.

Provide a cleaning service indoors and out. This will also include specialist cleaning of Silverware (training will be given).

Provide on site escorting duties for outside contractors etc.

Preparing rooms and locations for a range of uses.

General monitoring of public areas.

Localised errands for example the Post Office.

Skills and Requirements.

Hardworking, reliable and trustworthy with a flexible approach to work.

Be able to work unsupervised.

Good attention to detail.

Resourceful.

Good communications skills with a high level of customer awareness.

Driving Licence.

 

Previous experience desirable but not essential and might suit someone with an interest in history or silverware due to the nature of the business.

 

A full background vetting check will be carried out.
